I came across Day Birger et Mikkelsen on Sloane Street earlier this year and was taken by the dynamic colours and techniques used on both their fashion and home accessory collections. There is a real excitement in what they are doing with the various influences around the designs: ethnic, folk and craft-based with an underlying simplicity and modernity which may refer to the companies Scandinavian roots. Started by Keld Mikkelsen from Denmark in 1997 who wanted to create a brand from a design point of view and not a sales point of view, he cites inspirations for his style in colonial India, New York fleemarkets and the glamour of the twenties and thirties.
